SUNSET BLACKWATER SWAMP PADDLE
SUNSET BLACKWATER SWAMP PADDLE WITH SYCHRONOUS FIREFLIES
The Sunset Blackwater Swamp Paddle tour at The Woodlands Nature Reserve is a special version of our Blackwater Cypress Swamp Tour offering a unique opportunity to kayak, enjoy the sunset, and later in the season, view fireflies in one of South Carolina’s most mysterious ecosystems. As the sun sets, the swamp comes alive with frog and bird songs. At specific times of the year, this gives way to a dazzling light show provided by 1000's of fireflies! Fireflies are becoming less and less common world wide. Pesticides, light pollution, and habitat loss are a few of the things they are up against. Woodlands Nature Reserve happens to be a perfect place for these flashy little beetles! We have many species of fireflies (lightning bugs) in this area. Our most famous are the synchronous species, Snappy Single Sync. For a short period of time in late Spring/early Summer photuris frontalis aka Snappy Single Sync display a mating ritual of quick synchronized flashes. There are very few places in the world you can view this natural spectacle and being situated on a private nature reserve, makes for an intimate experience. Your naturalist guide will share their knowledge of the plants, animals, and history of this special forest.
